5 spotted Hawk Moth

It was almost dark when I took these pictures
and I couldn't tell much about the moth. It just
looked like a dark shape hovering around the
petunias.
The flash revealed something out of a sci-fi
movie. But it is not from Mars. It comes from
someplace even stranger.
It is called the 5 spotted Hawk Moth after the
striking yellow spots down the side of the
abdomen.
(Even though I count 6 per side for a total of
12. Hey, you probably noticed, too.)
And yes, that tongue is longer than the moth
itself.
Have you ever seen those big, ugly, green
tomato hornworms in your garden? Those are the
caterpillars that turn into these things.
