Circe
Wood Spirit, 2010
Rock Elm
7  inches tall
I really enjoyed carving this one. It was
supposed to be a simple wood spirit, but my
carvings never seem to stay simple. I believe
this was carved from the same tree that the
Snake Cane came from. It is some of the most
amazing wood I have ever carved.
It is very hard, tightly grained wood so it
holds detail very nicely. The color is
beautiful, especially with the red from the
bark, but the way this wood catches and
reflects light is what makes it special and
unique.
Even in dim light it seems to glow. In
bright sunlight it gleams like Tiger Eye
gemstone. It is a difficult property to
photograph, so even though I got some good
pictures of it, they don't do it justice.
She now belongs to a cool lady in
California, so this one has made it farther
from home than any of my carvings to date.
